The Impact of Diabetes in Mississippi

Diabetes is a prevalent and costly health concern in Mississippi, mirroring the national trend. The state faces significant challenges due to diabetes:

Prevalence

Approximately 333,501 adults in Mississippi, or 14.8% of the adult population, have diagnosed diabetes. An additional 75,000 individuals have undiagnosed diabetes, significantly increasing health risks. Moreover, 35.6% of Mississippi adults have prediabetes, indicating a high risk of developing diabetes.

Economic Burden

People with diabetes incur medical expenses approximately 2.3 times higher than those without the condition. In 2017, total direct medical expenses for diagnosed diabetes in Mississippi were estimated at $2.4 billion, with an additional $995 million spent on indirect costs from lost productivity.

Health Implications

Diabetes poses significant risks, potentially leading to severe complications like heart disease, stroke, amputation, end-stage kidney disease, blindness, and premature death. Managing diabetes is crucial to prevent these life-altering outcomes and ensure a healthier future.
